Replica - Pur Sang Bugatti Type 35. Every nut and bolt. Damn near 100% accurate.

Kinja'd!!!

Clone - 1970 AAR ‘Cuda. Take an entry level model (318 c.i.) and change everything necessary to make it damn near 100% accurate to a higher trim level.

Kinja'd!!!

Tribute - Like a clone but falls short, usually with regards to powerplant.

Kinja'd!!!

Backdated - Although it’s the first I’ve heard the term, I’d say the seller is using it incorrectly. It’s too vague. A backdated car to me would mean a clone created from a car much newer. Because of the inaccuracies with this car, I’d call it a tribute , or if need be, a tribute from a newer model . Rolls right off the tongue.

I fucking love those Bugattis and what that argentinian shop does. If I scored the lottery or somehow become mega wealthy that would be the first car I buy after a Hudson Hornet. Screw new cars, and screw a real one of a car that expensive. I’d buy that thing and drive it everywhere. Pure driving experience. Id probably also get a classic TVR and some sort of 50s/60s out there sports car (or replica)

I feel I see what you’re saying regarding the usage of the term ‘backdated’.  Perhaps, in general, using a later ‘gen’ car to create any version of a prior model could be considered ‘backdating’?

I would call it a restomod as they use newer parts/technologies like the varioram or brakes from a 930 while giving it and old school look .

I’d go for a R estomod ( backdated) as some things I wouldn’t want replicated from the original such as drum brakes or leaf spring suspension

To me a restomod is a resto ration with mod ern parts for reliability and drive-ability . Usually but not always identifiable from 50ft with bigger wheels and tires.

Unless they totally destroy the original look, then it’s just ruined.

I believe they will hide disks inside a fake drum, Leno has done that too.

Backdating is all the rage in the MG world - take a ‘70s MGB, ditch the rubber bumpers and the single Z-S carb, lower the ride height, and bolt on chrome bumpers and twin SUs. The VIN tells the story, but the car looks and runs a whole lot better.

Okay, to read that now, it makes sense. I’m now asking myself why this makes sense but the Porsche using the term backdating doesn’t. Is it because the MG was changed to a differe nt model year and the Porsche was changed to a different model year and also an extremely valuable icon?

Yeah, it’s a little different when you’re talking about a four-figure MG instead of a potentially six-figure Porsche...

Honestly, clones are some of the best values in the classic car market. Given the choice between a “ numbers matching small block automatic 68 Camaro” or a “ big block 4-speed Yenko clone” for the same money ... I’m choosing the Yenko clone all day everyday.

I could put the 2015-2017 GTI headlights and older infotainment in my car to backdate it?

Where do I sign up!?

Looking at a genuine Bugatti Typ 35 up close is a pretty fun endeavor. The supercharged straight 8 is cool and all, but some of the mechanical connections off the back of the engine to the firewall are just bizarre. Pretty sure there is a shaft coming off the back of the camshaft, and it drives a belt that goes to a second pulley in the firewall... And there’s also some connection of the distributor straight to inside the car to adjust the ignition timing on the fly.

They’re wild.

Backdate for Porsches usually refers to making a G-Body ( or in the case of Singer, the 964) look like the 901 body (63-73).

This one is both a backdate and a Tribute to the ‘73 RS.

In the 1980s, when the early cars were worthless, you could find long hoods made to look like G-bodies. (See here for one such victim: https://www.gullwingmotorcars.com/1971-porsche-911t-c-4057.htm )

I’m not sure, I do know Leno has some cars with fake drum coverings.
